This policy reflects the practice in place at Prairie View Elementary. It was created during the 2018-2019 school year.
The purpose of this policy is to establish a framework for valuing language diversity in our school that supports language learners and their families.
Belief and Value:
At Prairie View, we believe that language is essential to the success of all student learning. This includes the ability to express oneself (communicate) through speaking, reading, writing, drawing, acting, etc.
Support for Language Learners:
English is the primary language of instruction. English language learners are identified by district requirements. Our teachers work to create a caring language community to enhance the language of all students. Prairie View strives to promote language-rich classrooms for all students through guided discussions, Socratic seminar, and the use of multimedia and library resources. Our teachers are well informed of their students who have language needs and other language abilities.
Communication with Families:
School and community bilingual support by Parent Liaison
Parent-teacher conferences have interpretation
Written communication in English and Spanish or referral to Parent Liaison
Spanish is the second language taught to students through a variety of formats. Each student in K-5 attends a 35-minute Spanish class once a week. At Prairie View, 31% of our students are identified as English Language Learners whose primary language is Spanish. So our Spanish classes will be differentiated to better meet the needs of all of our students.
We have made it a priority to increase our language resources. We have built and continue to add to our school library with leveled books that support our IB planners. Our library has a variety of fiction and nonfiction books, and we are continuing to grow our collection of books in other languages. In addition, we have a variety of online databases to support student learning and research. Prairie View has purchased online programs to support students with reading. These programs have leveled books in English for use in school and at home.
